Damper Sizing

gross area:
Mixing Dampers: 1600 fpm
OSA Dampers on Outdoor units: 450 fpm
Exhaust air damper: 1200 fpm
Bypass damper: 1200 fpm total (could be 1/2 cfm through damper / 1/2 cfm through media)
Dampers are airfoil low pressure drop aluminum construction. Dampers are structurally supported for working pressures.

Mixing dampers – size for higher velocities for better mixing. Typically 1800 fpm for mixing ~.4″ wg or 1600 fpm ~.3″ wg.

Non Mixing – size for lower pressure drop 1200 fpm ~.2″ wg

Louvers are typically sized for minimal water carryover
Water Caryover @ 1150 fpm, use 900 fpm gross area conservatively. ~.15″ wg
~ 50 – 60 % effective free area ~ 450 fpm on smaller units gross fpm or 550 fpm on larger.
Mixing and Air stratification
low velocity mixing
use higher velocity, large units use smaller control damper for low flow also position dampers correctly
Leads to poor life / wear and poor performance
